“There were three Fates in Greek mythology: Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos. Clotho, the spinner, was the youngest of the three Fates; she spun the thread of destiny with a distaff, determining the time of birth of an individual; Lachesis, the measurer, who chooses the lot in life one will have and measures off how long it is to be; finally, cruel Atropos cut the thread of life, determining this way the time of death.” At half-90 and with a great pair of old shears on loan from an acquaintance, I decided to do an impromptu series with myself as Lachesis, the middle Fate. The freshly blossomed daffodil of youth dangles to the left (behind me) in this portrait while the shears dangle in front of me, ready to nip the thread suspending the daffodil. I am measuring the thread, an active (and accepting) participant in the process of life in all of its cycles.
