Mr. Bill Ramser on his back porch at Ramser’s Landing. Mr. Bill Ramser is a near neighbor. I photographed his front yard totem poles and used prints of the same as an excuse to introduce myself. Mr. Ramser was a professional dancer (in New York: tap, jazz, ballet) and with his children ran dance studios in this area for many years. He claims not to be an artist, with a twinkle in his eye, while simultaneously offering what I think of as the Artist’s Creed: “When I get interested in something, that’s all I do. I am consumed by it. Once it’s done, it’s done. I’ve got to make something new then.” The giant fish, totem poles and sea-figures in his yard are his work. The beautiful (even in winter state) yard is his work. He seems to me absolutely comfortable in his own skin. He bought this house at a yard sale (a story he obviously cherishes). “I was staying with my sister in Louisville and rode my bike over here for a yard sale. Looked around at the tables. Looked up and saw a little cardboard sign on the porch, ‘for sale.’ Bought my house at a yard sale.” He’s been in the neighborhood about 15 years. He wanted to be close to the river and the boat ramp—he’s an avid fisherman and hunter. A spry fellow, with a twinkle in his beautiful blue eyes.
