I titled the work as I did while thinking about a quote from Margaret Mead: "The young, free to act on their initiative, can lead their elders in the direction of the unknown… The children, the young, must ask the questions that we would never think to ask, but enough trust must be re-established so that the elders will be permitted to work with them on the answers." I was particularly struck by the strength of character and personality of both Ron and his daughter that one can sense in this portrait. There are strong visual cues of each person's self-containment even as their bond/connection is clear. Rani appears to be moving forward into the world with her own purpose and in her own power. Ron's hands and body position speak to me of lovingly and supportively moving to the side to encourage Rani's leadership into the unknown future. The palpable bond between them suggests to me that--even as their parent/child roles evolve and change--they will be working together on "the answers."
